Schoolyard Stories -Seventh week: where challenges turned into confidence and teaching became my rhythm.
“A week of joy and sorrow — where celebrations and loss together shaped unforgettable memories.”
Seventh Week Teaching Practice -25th–29th August
The seventh week of my teaching practice was a fine blend of classroom teaching and examination responsibilities. Plus One students had their internal examinations along with regular Business Studies classes, while Plus Two students were engaged in their Onam examinations. This dual setting gave me the chance to experience the rhythm of both teaching and exam coordination.
On 27th August, the high school section celebrated Onam with great joy. Students prepared a beautiful Athapookalam, sang traditional Onappattu, and presented various cultural programmes . We teachers were also invited to share the festive spirit by having payasam, lovingly distributed by our Principal. The Onam mood filled the campus, and the students truly enjoyed the celebrations, adding colour and warmth to the week.
In our Higher Secondary department, we had decided to celebrate Onam on 29th August. But tragically, on 28th August, we lost one of our beloved 7th standard students who had been bravely fighting cancer. The entire programme was cancelled, and teachers went to pay their last respects. It was one of the most painful moments of this practice, reminding us how fragile life is. On that day, the school was closed for Onam vacation and was scheduled to reopen on 8th September.
Before dispersing for vacation, our Principal informed us that after reopening, once the children’s Onam programmes were completed, a Joining Party and Send-off would be held at 2:00 p.m. All teachers were requested to attend, and this information was also conveyed to the transferred teachers—Deepa Teacher, Firoz Sir, and Rahul Sir.
Apart from these events, I was entrusted with exam duty and discipline duty, which taught me the value of vigilance and responsibility inside the school environment. I also conducted revision and remedial classes for both Plus One and Plus Two, ensuring that students clarified their doubts and felt supported in their preparation.
Looking back, this week gave me meaningful opportunities to balance teaching, examinations, cultural experiences, and life’s realities. It was a week that began with festive joy, turned into deep sorrow, and ended with responsibilities and reflections that will stay with me forever.
“The school remains closed for Onam vacation from August 29 to September 7. With hearts full of festive memories, we now look forward to reopening on September 8, waiting eagerly to step back into our classrooms.”...
